Poverty and Education

Education is a crucial necessity for a person's well-being, but a lack of it can have severe consequences on the nation. Poverty leads to a cycle of lack of basic needs such as healthcare, food intake, and mental health issues, which can lead to malnutrition and a lower salary. In India, where the population is highly populated, many people struggle to find jobs, with 44% of the population living below the poverty line in 2018.
Education plays a vital role in the future of the country, but many people do not receive it due to various factors. Home education is essential for developing phonemic and cognitive abilities, but low-income households often lack access to education. Parents who lack formal education often downplay the value of education and are reluctant to invest in schools.
Other obstacles to proper education include lack of school buildings and educated teachers, as well as disadvantaged castes and women who have been generationally prevented from receiving education. Many children are not exposed to necessary social skills and stimulation, which can make them feel distanced and discouraged.
Education promotes economic growth by providing skills that increase employment opportunities, income, and introduce new ideas. Nearly 60 million people could escape poverty if all adults had two more years of schooling, and 420 million people could be lifted out of poverty if all adults completed secondary education.

An Interview with a representative from an NGO

Poverty and education are majorly intertwined, with poverty acting as a significant barrier to educational achievement, portraying as a consequential barrier towards academic qualification as well as achievement. Children growing up in impoverished households sometimes face obstacles like malnutrition, unstable living conditions, in addition to a limited access to educational resources such as textbooks, technology, extracurricular activity to catalyze their creativity, and a quiet place to study. These challenges obstruct them on their educational journey and lead to higher number of dropouts, poor academic performance, and lower educational attainment. Without established and high-quality education, citizens may struggle to secure well-paying jobs, confining them into the perennial cycle of poverty. On the other hand, a lack of education will result in limiting opportunities for enhancing lifestyles, further intensifying the divide between the rich and the poor. This cycle perpetuates inequality, where poverty hinders education, and the lack of education ensuring that poverty is passed onto future generations.
